Galactic Traffic Control Trailer
As a look development artist at Flow Animation, I worked on creating the overall look of a short trailer we are creating for Galactic Traffic Control, a game created by GnomeCap Games. Below is the final look of the piece. In the end, we decided to reference "The Jetsons" to create the final look | responsible for set modeling, dressing, look development, and lighting in Blender
Process
Initial tests of the environment included a more realistic approach. After multiple iterations, the environment became more of a blend of the 2D and 3D look. Here are some process photos of early look development explorations
Shot Breakdown
After finalizing the look and feel of the environment, we went on to create a larger scale environment that feels more like outer-space. Here is a breakdown of the final environment for this short trailer
Shading
In this peice, I wanted to explore the capabilities of using procedral textures to speed up the process of shading. I used the noise node attached to the alpha and animated the offset of the noise node, so that the rings move subtly in circles as the camera pushes in. Here is the node tree I created:
Background Matte Painting & Particles
The background is a matte painting done in Photoshop, but I also made sure to use a color ramp node to adjust the colors in 3D. For the particles, I created a simple particle emitter system to emulate stars in outer space using an icosphere as the particle object. Below is a comparison render without particles vs with particles
Lighting & Compositing
To ensure that the scenes had the same look and feel, I created a compositing tree node group that would be appended into each Blender file to give the short a cohesive look. This includes color correction and adding bloom
Contact Sheet
Here is a contact sheet I helped create to ensure that lighting stays consistent throughout the short. I was responsible for the initial lighting set-ups for each scene that was later tweaked during the production of the short
