Film Trailer
thesis logline: A girl residing in an abandoned carousel leaves the painting to race against the clock to fix her carousel before it gets destroyed the next day.
Process Breakdown
The Carousel is the most important part of this film, I referenced a lot of art nouveau, art deco pieces to create the carousel, I wanted the design to be ornate and full of floral elements. Below is the result of the fixed carousel vs the broken carousel | Responsible for all aspects in this film
The Characters: Introducing Mina, the girl residing in the painting of the carousel & Dan the construction worker tasked with demolishing the carousel
Rig breakdown for Mina: I used clusters and a lattice deformer that controls each section of her body part so that she compresses when she hits the wall
Look Development
In the beginning of the film, Mina is part of the mural so I had to ensure the shader was cohesive with the wall. To achieve this look, I used the posterize node in Nuke to give her a more graphic look, and utilized toon shading in Maya so she blends well into the wall. Below is what she looks like without toon shading and posterization vs the final look.
Shader Tests: Toon shader on Mina to create her flat look when she blends into the wall & mural texture breakdown, using normals to project dirt which also reduced the roughness of the wall
Layout & Animation
Here are some shot progressions of how my film changed from layout to final animation. One of the most challenging shots was the rotating zoom in into the eye, which I used a dolly camera for
Film Stills
Breakdown of some of the film stills including modeling, texturing and surfacing, lighting, and compositing, and FX
FX
The FX for this film was mainly done in Maya using the nParticles system and enhanced to create different shapes with the glint node in Nuke
Visual Development
early concepts and development which includes character, environment, prop designs and color keys
